Flood hits roads in Metro Manila – MMDA

Flood hits some roads in Metro Manila amid persistent rains since Tuesday morning (July 23, 2024) due to the effects of Typhoon Carina (International name: Gaemi) and southwest monsoon, locally termed habagat, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). INQUIRER FILES

MANILA, Philippines — Gutter-deep floods hit some roads in Metro Manila amid persistent rains since Tuesday morning, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.

Based on the MMDA’s advisory, eight-inch-high floodwaters submerged portions of the following roads as of 11:58 a.m., July 23:

According to the 11 a.m. bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Typhoon Carina (International name: Gaemi) slightly intensified as it packed maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness up to 170 kph. The typhoon was last located 320 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes.

Pagasa raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 over Batanes towns Itbayat, Basco, Mahateo, Uyagan, and Ivana while TCWS No. 1 was declared in the following areas:

  • The rest of Batanes (Sabtang)
  • Cagayan including Babuyan Islands
  • Eastern portion of Isabela (Divilacan, Palanan, Maconacon, Dinapigue, Tumauini, Ilagan City, San Mariano,
  • Cabagan, San Pablo, Santa Maria)
  • Northern portion of Apayao (Calanasan, Luna, Pudtol, Flora, Santa Marcela)
  • Northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud, Bangui, Adams, Dumalneg, Burgos, Vintar)
  • Northern portion of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran)
  • Polillo Islands
  • Calaguas Island
  • Northern portion of Catanduanes (Pandan, Bangamanoc, Panganiban, Viga, Gigmoto, Caramoran)

Carina was also enhancing the prevailing southwest monsoon, locally termed habagat, in other parts of the country, according to Pagasa.

The state weather agency said the typhoon-boosted southwest monsoon is anticipated to bring moderate to intense rainfall in the western part of Luzon until Thursday, July 25.
