Inquirer reporter Julie Alipala; 58
DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Inquirer reporter Julie Alipala, who spent decades covering conflicts and peace-building efforts in Mindanao, died early Thursday morning. She was 58.
Her sister, Emma, informed members of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) through a group chat that Alipala died at 4:42 a.m. on April 3.
She was based in Zamboanga City.
A former longtime member of NUJP’s national directorate, Alipala remained a staunch advocate for press freedom and media safety throughout her career.
In late 2024, she was diagnosed with endometrial cancer with serous carcinoma and had been undergoing post-surgery treatment. Five days ago, she was hospitalized due to breathing difficulties.
Alipala wrote for the Inquirer for over two decades, first as a correspondent before becoming a regular reporter in the last 15 years.
She extensively covered wars, conflicts, and peace-building efforts in Basilan, Sulu, and the Zamboanga Peninsula region.
