Grade 11 student dies in alleged fraternity hazing in Nueva Ecija

JAEN, Nueva Ecija — An 18-year-old student was killed during an alleged fraternity hazing rites in Barangay San Anton, Nueva Ecija, on Sunday night, Sept. 29.

The victim, identified as Ren Joseph Bayan, a Grade 11 student from Barangay San Pablo, was found lifeless after reportedly undergoing the final rites of initiation for the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity.

Jennifer Bayan, the victim’s 28-year-old aunt, told investigators that her nephew had informed her earlier that day that he was participating in the final stage of fraternity hazing.

Around 5 p.m., two neighbors, identified as Baron Cabado and Patrick Guinto—allegedly members of the same fraternity—brought Bayan’s body to his home.

Cabado and Guinto are now considered suspects, according to the police report.

“They claimed to have taken him to a doctor, but when we checked, no doctor had seen him,” Jennifer said in an interview.

“His thighs were badly bruised, and the doctors explained that complications in his kidneys and heart led to his death,” she said.

Police Maj. Herbert Ocumen, Jaen’s chief of police, said that a hot pursuit operation is underway to apprehend the suspects. INQ
