MANILA, Philippines — A storm surge warning was hoisted over six provinces in Luzon due to Super Typhoon Ofel (international name: Usagi).

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Thursday the storm surge is likely to occur within the next 48 hours as Ofel continues to gain more power.

Pagasa weather expert Veronica Torres noted that Ofel is anticipated to make landfall between noon and 5 p.m., November 14, near Cagayan.

A storm surge height of 2.1 to 3.0 m could cause moderate to significant damage, Pagasa noted, while a storm surge height of 1.0 to 2.0 m could cause minimal to moderate damage.

Pagasa advised residents in low-lying coastal communities to stay away from the coast or beach, cancel all marine activities, and closely monitor updates from the weather agency.

Ofel’s latest track placed the super typhoon at 165 kilometers east-southeast of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, carrying maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 230 kph while moving northwestward at 15 kph.
