MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island emitted ash, and 23 volcanic earthquakes were recorded on Saturday, January 4, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

In its Sunday bulletin, Phivolcs said the ash emission lasted 111 minutes, sending voluminous plumes 500 meters high.

Meanwhile, the volcanic earthquakes lasted between four and 111 minutes.

Phivolcs added that the volcano produced an average of 3,469 tonnes of sulfur dioxide per day as of January 4.

Kanlaon Volcano remains under alert level 3, which indicates intensified or magmatic unrest. With this, flying any aircraft is still prohibited near the volcano.

Phivolcs warned that potential hazards include explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, rockfalls, and lahars during heavy rains.

Evacuation within the six-kilometer radius from the volcano’s summit is also recommended.

Saturday marked the fourth consecutive day of more than 20 recorded earthquakes near the volcano.

Phivolcs reported 27 volcanic tremors on Friday.
