MANILA, Philippines — Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III will file cyber libel complaints against former broadcaster Jay Sonza and another vlogger for spreading “fake news” about him.
Torre said he intends to seek accountability over rumors and photos circulating online claiming that he was hospitalized.
“Kapag nakaluwag-luwag na ako, ‘yung mga nagpost na ako’y naospital, nagkasakit I’m going to file cyberlibel cases against them. Ang tinatamaan ay pamilya ko hindi lang sa personal kungdi sa mga colleagues ko din hindi na tumigil ang aking cellphone: get well, get well anong nangyari sayo?” the CIDG chief said in an ambush interview on Monday.
(Once my schedule clears up, I am going to file cyber libel cases against those who posted that I was in the hospital and got sick. Because this not only affected my personal life but also my colleagues and my phone kept receiving messages asking me what happened and to get well soon.)

“Si Jay Sonza at nakalimutan ko ‘yung isang vlogger din na… pero ang isang nakita ko na unang unang nagpost non ay si Jay Sonza, I would like to bring them to court […] I‘m going to file cases against them pati yung mga kung makabatikos akala mo sila lang ang nakakaalam ang lahat,” he added.
(Jay Sonza and another vlogger. One of the posts I saw was from Sonza and I would like to bring it to court. I am going to file cases against them, including those who criticize me, feeling like they know everything.)
In a Facebook post on January 14, Torre shared screenshots of posts from two social media pages.
The first screenshot features Sonza’s post stating that “the Father started to penalize” those who “abuse their power” against the “innocent religious missionary of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KJC)” — which was founded by detained televangelist and alleged rapist Apollo Quiboloy.
“ISINUGOD SA PAGAMUTAN ANG ISA SA NAMUNO SA PAGKUBKOB SA RELIGIOUS COMPOUND NG KINGDOM OF JESUS OF CHRIST,” raeads Sonza’s post dated January 12.
(The leader of the raid to the religious compound KJC was rushed to the hospital.)
Sonza did not mention Torre’s name in the post but shared a photo of the CIDG chief and other police personnel who raided the KJC compound in Davao City in August 2024.
Torre was present during that raid as he was the police director of Davao Region at that time.
The 16-day police operation at the KJC compound led to the arrest of Quiboloy on September 8, 2023.

The second screenshot was of private citizen Jun Abines’ post, in which an alleged photo of Torre lying on a hospital bed was shown.
“Ano kaya sakit nya? Mukhang malala. Padalhan kaya siya ng bulaklak ng Malakanyang? O baka KJC pa mauna mag pray para sa kanya at mag padala ng Bulaklak?” Abines wrote on January 12.
(What is his illness? It seems severe. Will Malacañang send him flowers or KJC members will be the first to pray for him and give him flowers?)
“Ang buhay ay parang gulong. Minsan nasa itaas tayo, minsan nasa ibaba. Kaya mas okay magpakumbaba at rumespito sa kapwa. Di ba Gen. Nicolas Torre?” Abines’ social media post also states.
(Life is like a wheel. Sometimes we’re up, sometimes we’re down. That’s it’s better to be humble and respectful of others. Right, Gen. Nicolas Torre?)
