Amihan to strengthen in coming days, to trigger rains in eastern PH

MANILA, Philippines — The northeast monsoon (locally known as amihan) will intensify in the coming days, triggering rains along the eastern section of the country, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Pagasa announced the onset of the amihan season last Nov. 19. The monsoon typically ends in the following March or April.

“Patuloy pa ring umiiral ang northeast monsoon o amihan dito sa bahagi ng Northern at Central Luzon. Ngayon maging sa mga susunod ng araw ay bahagyang magiging malakas ito,” Pagasa weather specialist Grace Castañeda said in the agency’s forecast Saturday morning.
(The northeast monsoon continues to prevail over Northern and Central Luzon. It is expected to remain slightly strong today and in the coming days.)

A shear line occurs when cold winds from the northeast monsoon converge with warm winds from the easterlies or the Pacific Ocean.

Pagasa added that it is not monitoring any new low pressure areas within or near the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), nor has it issued any gale warnings over the country’s seaboards.
However, Castañeda warned, “Sa mga susunod na araw kung saan ine-expect natin na posibleng maging mas malakas yung amihan, continuous monitoring tayo… sa posibilidad… [na] maging katamtaman hanggang sa maalon yung lagay ng mga dagat-baybayin natin dito sa area ng Northern Luzon.”
