1Pacman Partylist Rep. Mikee Romero said the SWS poll results are timely.

“People are now well aware of the impact of sports and youth development for the overall wellness of the citizenry,” stated Romero.

“Sporting involves  grassroots promotion that lead to community wellness and Philippine sporting excellence in Asia and the world. It must certainly be on the national agenda. Importantly, communities all over the country are enjoined to participate in realizing the benefits of sports and youth advocacy,” said Romero, a sporting advocate way before starting his political service who earned the moniker Godfather of Philippine amateur basketball from the prestigious Philippine Sportswriters Association.

A former collegiate basketball player, he moved on to achieve, among other sporting glories, including a noteworthy spot in the Philippines in the game of polo.

Romero brings honor to the country, as the Philippine flag flies for the first time at the prestigious US Polo Open championship in Florida this March.

1Pacman’s place among top partylist contenders comes on the heels of the 100th anniversary of the Philippine participation in the Olympic Games.

In 1924, the country sent its first contingent to the Olympics held in Paris.

The country has produced world-class athletes in many fields.

Most distinguished, perhaps in all of Asia,  is  Manny Pacquaio, who is boxing champion in eight divisions.

His sensational, record-breaking achievements in boxing has given the Philippines great pride and honor. The roster of Filipino sports achievers is long, and in many fields.

The 2024 Paris Olympics itself has continued to yield glorious names of achievers, further underscoring that the real work starts with the young, and providing them the best possible support at the earliest time possible.

1Pacman is affirmed on the transformative power of sports affecting the very core of persons’ determination to achieve, improve their skills, work with teams, seek mentorship and guidance, which are all pillars of building good lives.

Passing the torch

Rep.Romero has, thus, passed on the leadership of 1Pacman to another sportsman, Milka Romero, his daughter who also acted as chairman of the party list during the past terms.

Milka was formerly with the national women’s football team, and is likewise a civic and business leader at a young age.

Together with her sister Mandy, she is now also the owner of the Capital1 Solar Spikers, a team that’s active with the Philippine Volleyball League.

Joining Milka in the roster of 1Pacman nominees is Bobby Pacquiao, a former congressman who was a boxing champion in his own right before hanging up his gloves to pursue public service.

“Going around the country, and presenting our advocacy to young people, I’ve become even more inspired to spread the positive mantra of having sports in young people’s lives. We see them hankering for activities and the chance to improve their skills with good mentors,” said Milka.

Authored, sponsored bills

She is also energized to share with young audiences the many achievements made by 1Pacman in the last nine years when her father served for three terms, with the last term having Congressman Romero as chairman of the Committee on Poverty Alleviation.

One of the 144 laws he authored and co-sponsored is the  Republic Act No. 11214, which mandated the construction of the Philippine Sports Training Center (PSTC) is institutionalized.

To be run by the Philippine Sports Commission, it is set to be the home to develop sports in the country, achieve excellence in international sports competitions, as well as  achieve competitiveness in the Olympic Games.

Tangere survey

Reports on another recent survey by Tangere, a technology and innovation-driven market research company, also showed 1Pacman to be in the top ten in its survey which was done from Jan. 8 to 11, 2025.

It was conducted via mobile-based respondent application with a 2,400-participant sample size that had 12 percent coming from NCR, 23 percent from Northern Luzon, 22 percent from Southern Luzon, 20 percent from Visayas, and 23 percent from Mindanao.

The survey also revealed that the concerns relevant to the public include curbing rising prices, fighting against corruption and providing more services related to health care.

“Sports is right up the alley of health, as it promotes physical, mental, and social well-being. Young people find important social interaction in sports and, in fact, create communities of their choice wherein they find valuable support, an important element for mental well-being,” said Milka.
