TUGUEGARAO CITY — The police chief of Santa Ana town, Cagayan succumbed to injuries on Tuesday, hours after his SUV was rear-ended by a passenger van along the national road in Sitio Limbus, Rapuli, Santa Ana, on Tuesday, April 1, police reported.
Major Ranolfo Gabatin was initially rushed to Father Gerry Filippetto Memorial Hospital in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Santa Ana, but later died, according to Captain Junatess Acacio, deputy police chief.
Investigators stated that Gabatin honked to signal his intent to overtake a van driven by Joseph Munzon, 56, of the same village.
However, Munzon’s vehicle unexpectedly accelerated, colliding with the rear of Gabatin’s SUV.
The impact caused Gabatin’s vehicle to roll over, crash into a concrete railing, and nearly plunge into a ravine.
Emergency responders arrived promptly and transported him to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries hours later.
Munzon, who was uninjured, surrendered to the police. A case for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide has been filed against him at the prosecutor’s office on Wednesday. INQ
