Clearing of jammed highways in Yolanda-hit areas goes in full swing

MANILA, Philippines–The Department of Public Works and Highways is targeting to clear up the national highways in Yolanda-hit areas that were rendered impassable by debris within the day to ensure speedy delivery of aid to survivors, an official said Wednesday.

DPWH Undersecretary Romeo Momo said clearing efforts on jammed highways went in full swing, but workers have been told to take extra caution as some roads might be strewn with bodies.

Once the highways have been opened, Momo said only then will they concentrate on clearing operations for the municipal and village roads.

He is confident that clearing operations will be much faster after augmentation teams from Mindanao composed of 70 laborers, engineers, foremen and equipment operators arrived Tuesday.

There are also augmentation teams from Davao, National Capital Region, Regions 3 and Region 4-A.
