CEBU CITY–Students and employees were stranded in the streets of Mandaue and Cebu cities after public utility drivers went on strike to protest increase in fines for operation of ‘colorum’ (unauthorized) vehicles.

Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak said about 60 to 70 percent of the city’s mass transport was paralyzed by the strike. Tumulak said the city government fielded 28 buses and some barangay vehicles to ferry stranded passengers. He said the city prepared for the strike that was first reported to start at 10 a.m. But the city officials were surprised when the drivers decided to start the mass action earlier at 6 a.m.
