Visaya and Año are both from the Philippine Military Academy “Matikas” Class of 1983.

Talks in military circles said that Año’s closest contender was Lt. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero, commander of the Eastern Mindanao Command based in Davao, the hometown of Duterte. He is a member of PMA Class 1984.

Before he was named Army chief in July 2015, Año led the Army’s 10th Infantry Division, which covers Davao region and parts of Soccsksargen. It was during his stint there when New People’s Army commander Leoncio Pitao alias Kumander Parago, the most prominent rebel leader in Southern Mindanao, was killed by the military in an encounter in Paquibato district.
