Bongbong Marcos to continue Duterte鈥檚 infrastructure program

MANILA, Philippines — Former President Rodrigo Duterte’s infrastructure program will continue under the administration of his successor Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
During his first State of the Nation Address on Monday, Marcos said that he would not only pursue Duterte’s infrastructure program but would also expand it.
“The backbone of an economy is its infrastructure. The infrastructure program of the Duterte administration must not only continue but, wherever possible, be expanded,” he said.
“We shall confidently build on this firm foundation established by my predecessor. As it is in building an edifice. We must keep the momentum. And aspire to build better more,” he added.
He said he would not suspend any ongoing infrastructure projects as they would benefit the public.
According to Marcos, infrastructure development spending will be at 5 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).
He also viewed the public-private partnerships as a way to push the planned expansion of infrastructure projects.
‘Missed a great opportunity’
Meanwhile, the country “missed a great opportunity” to develop the rail transport system, Marcos said.
“It is clear in my mind that railways offer great potential as it continues to be the cheapest way of transporting goods and passengers,” he said. “We can build upon already existing lines by modernizing these old railway systems.”
Marcos said that he would continue to improve roads and transportation systems in key cities.
“My order to the Department of Transportation is simple: Full speed ahead,” he said.
“Improving our railway system, along with modernizing existing airports and seaports, will maximize our strategic location in the Pacific. And connect our many islands,” the chief executive continued.
In 2021, the government’s public infrastructure spending reached a record-high P1.12 trillion — or 5.8 percent of the GDP.
When Duterte stepped down from office, 94 projects amounting to P4.5 trillion were left for the next administration.
