Long weekend set in first week of April

MANILA, Philippines — The public will have a long weekend on the first week of April as Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor), which falls on a Sunday, was moved to April 10, Monday.
The move was made under Proclamation No. 90 issued by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in November last year “to encourage domestic travel and increase tourism expenditures in the country.” He also noted “the Filipino tradition of visiting relatives and spending time with their families for this occasion.”
Araw ng Kagitingan marks the heroism of Filipinos and American soldiers during the siege of Bataan against Japan during World War II.
Maundy Thursday and Good Friday on April 6 and 7 are regular holidays while April 8 and 9 fall on a weekend, giving Filipinos a five-day break.
Holy Week is an important religious event in the Philippines, particularly for Catholics.

Article continues after this advertisementUnder Proclamation No. 90, the President also moved the Nov. 30, Bonifacio Day, which falls on a Thursday, to Nov. 27, Monday.
Marcos earlier moved the Edsa 1 celebration to Feb. 24, Friday, instead of Feb. 25, which is a Saturday.
The president said adjusting holidays would allow the public to avail of the benefits of a longer weekend pursuant to the principle of holiday economics.
In a speech during the annual “Tan-Ok Ni Ilocano: The Festival of Festivals” in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, Marcos said, “The government’s commitment to strengthen the domestic tourism industry remains a top priority.”
