10-year-old math whiz from Olongapo City hailed in Senate resolution
MANILA, Philippines — A resolution, congratulating and commending a 10-year-old student from Olongapo City for winning the gold medal for the Philippines in the recent 4th Copernicus International Math Olympiad, has been filed in the Senate.
Senator Lito Lapid filed Senate Resolution No. 685 early this week but a copy of the document was only released to the media on Thursday.
In the resolution, Lapid hailed Francis Deinmel Legaspi, a student at the Special Education Center for the Gifted-Kalayaan (SPED-G Kalayaan), “for bringing pride and inspiration to the Filipino people.”
Legaspi beat more than 100 participants from 22 countries across the globe during the competition held at Columbia University in the United States from July 9-13.

Article continues after this advertisementAccording to the resolution, this is not the first time that Legaspi bagged a gold medal for the country as he also won in various math competitions: in Hong Kong International Math Olympiad, Philippine International Math Olympiad, and World International Math Olympiad.
Article continues after this advertisement“The consistent exemplary and outstanding performance of Francis Deinmel Legaspi, resulting in another gold medal victory for the Philippines, deserves the utmost praise, recognition, and commendation for bringing pride and inspiration to the Filipino people,” Lapid said in the resolution.
“Now, therefore, be it resolved, for the Senate of the Philippines to congratulate and commend Francis Deinmel Legaspi for securing the gold medal for the Philippines during the 4th Copernicus International Math Olympiad held in Columbia University, New York, United States from July 9-13, 2023,” his resolution also reads.
The Copernicus International Math Olympiad gathers students from Grades 3 to 12 to compete in both mathematics and astronomy competitions.
The primary objectives of this competition include fostering a greater interest in science and its interconnected disciplines among the students, as well as enhancing and developing their potential by sharpening their logical deduction abilities, the resolution said.
