Davao de Oro landslide: Number of bodies recovered climbs to 90

MANILA, Philippines — The number of bodies recovered from the landslide in a mining village in Maco, Davao de Oro, increased to 90, the local government said Thursday.

Leah Añora, unit member of Maco town’s “Management of the Dead and the Missing,” said the latest fatality count was logged as of noon, February 15. The figure was 85 on Wednesday.

She added that 37 people remain missing.

Vehicles carrying 86 workers of Apex Mining Corp. were buried in a landslide that happened at 7:00 p.m. on February 6 in Barangay Masara in Maco town, according to the Eastern Mindanao Command.

Some 300 families or 2,000 individuals were also affected by the landslide, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

The OCD said multiple weather disturbances like the shear line, northeast monsoon, and the trough of a low pressure area hit the Davao region since late last month, which caused widespread flooding and landslide incidents in the region.
