DOTr says PH's 1st cable car system may be operational by 2028

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that the Philippines’ first cable car system may be operational by 2028.

Dubbed the Antipolo Cable Car Project, the DOTr said the transport system will connect the Taytay station of the Metro Rail Transit Line-4 (MRT-4) to Antipolo City.

DOTr Undersecretary Timothy Batan said during the Build Better More Infrastructure forum on Thursday that the cable car system’s cost and passenger capacity will still be determined through a detailed feasibility study in 2025.

“It’s our first cable car project. We were told that it would take up to 2 years of construction. If we can award the contract in 2026, it is possible to [be operational] in 2028,” he said, as quoted in a DOTr statement.

The bidding for the project will likely take place in 2026 once the feasibility study is complete, the DOTr said.

The Asian Development Bank funded the pre-feasibility study for the cable car plan and will continue to finance its feasibility study in 2025.

Last June, the DOTr announced that the first 12 stations of the MRT-7 are expected to be operational by end of 2025.
