Siargao Surgical Mission 2.0: Bringing healthcare to all Surigaonons
MANILA , Philippines – In a remarkable display of medical service, the Sui Generis Mission, in partnership with the Cebu Doctors Group of Surgeons, is set to hold the “Siargao Surgical Mission 2.0” from January 25 to 28 at the Siargao Island Medical Center.
This initiative, organized in coordination with the Philippine Hernia Society and Cebu Doctor’s University Hospital, aims to provide free surgeries to residents in need, regardless of political affiliation or background.
In an interview with Dr. Chloe Digal, Chief of Siargao Island Medical Center, she mentions that this year’s mission continues the success of the inaugural Siargao Surgical Mission 1.0 in 2023, which was co-organized by the Sui Generis Group and Congressman Bingo Matugas.
However, given the current election season, Dr. Digal shares that the medical organizing bodies have opted to manage the mission independently to ensure it remains a purely humanitarian endeavor.

To maintain transparency and fairness, the mission’s organizers have established a clear protocol for patient listing. Only the Rural Health Units (RHUs) are authorized to curate and manage the list of patients for surgeries. The RHUs will:
- Check potential patients.
- Conduct free laboratory tests.
- Screen individuals to determine if they are fit for surgery.
- Finalize the list of patients for each day of the mission.
Residents are advised to beware of false claims by any political groups or individuals stating they can curate the patient lists for this surgical mission.
These claims are baseless and contrary to the mission’s principles.
Residents are advised to coordinate directly with their RHU health center for assessment and listing.
Prioritizing those in need
The mission prioritizes individuals who are most in need of medical intervention, particularly those who are among the poorest of the poor.
Surigaonons are encouraged to visit their RHU health centers for check-ups and consultation.
The health centers will guide patients on whether they require surgery and, if eligible, ensure they are included in the list.
A wide range of services
While the mission spans four days, the doctors will primarily be operating for 2.5 days, dedicating the remaining time to follow-up care and finishing any necessary procedures.
The Siargao Surgical Mission 2.0 will address a variety of medical needs, including:
General Surgery:
- Laparoscopic gallbladder surgeries (40 cases)
- Adult and pediatric hernia surgeries (35 cases)
Specialized Surgeries:
- Head, neck, and breast surgeries (45 cases)
- Vascular surgeries, including AV fistula creation (30 cases)
- Gynecological surgeries (15 cases)
- Anal surgeries (15 cases)
Eye and Dental Care:
- Ophthalmology services, including cataract (30 cases) and pterygium surgeries (30 cases), as well as screenings for 100 patients
- Dental extractions (375 teeth)
- Distribution of 500 eyeglasses through optometry services
Minor Surgeries:
- Removal of lumps and bumps (200 cases)
Support and logistics
While the mission is apolitical, any supplemental help and support from local leaders is welcome.
Congressman Bingo Matugas is providing additional logistical support by taking care of the transportation needs of all doctors and surgeons during their stay on the island.
This ensures that the medical team can focus entirely on delivering quality healthcare services to the people of Siargao.
A call to action for Surigaonons
Surigaonons in need of surgical interventions are urged to follow the proper channels by coordinating with their local RHUs.
Avoid engaging with unauthorized individuals or groups claiming to have control over patient listings.
This mission is for everyone—no matter their political color—as long as they go through the correct process.
A mission of hope and healing
The Siargao Surgical Mission 2.0 stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the commitment of medical professionals to serve humanity.
With the unwavering dedication of the Sui Generis Mission, Cebu Doctors Group of Surgeons, and supporting organizations, this mission aims to make a lasting impact on the health and lives of Surigaonons.
