MANILA, Philippines — “Please don’t shame our police just for the clicks and views.”

National Police Commission (Napolcom) Commissioner Ralph Calinisan made this statement on Friday, following a video where the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) ticketed a Quezon City cop for parking on the sidewalk.

FEATURED STORIES

The video supposedly posted online showed MMDA Special Operations Group Strike Force head Gabriel Go in clearing operations affecting the Anonas Police Station on March 25.

“Mutual respect between the MMDA and the PNP [Philippine National Police] would be most appreciated. Law enforcement is not a contest of who looks better. We don’t need to one-up each other as we are partners in this effort,” Calinisan said in a mix of English and Filipino.

“I agree that Metro Manila streets must be cleared of all obstructions from private individuals or government officials. Pero ‘wag naman sana natin ipahiya ang pulis natin just for the clicks and views,” he added.

According to the Napolcom commissioner, Go had never spoken with the station commander of the Anonas Police Station to call his attention to the matter, as the MMDA strike force head supposedly claimed in the video.

“However, it is still not an excuse for policemen to park on the sidewalk,” he added.

Further, Calinisan appealed that the video be uploaded “unedited and unspliced.”

“In the event that our policeman was overbearing, disciplinary action would be initiated against him. We will file a case against him if needed,” Calinisan said.

“But maybe there is no need to shame on video a police officer who was humble enough. Let us do our work passionately. But let us not be excessive. It seemed rather excessive. Let us all be calm in carrying out our responsibilities,” he added.

In a separate statement on Saturday, the Quezon City Police District said it would “cooperate and maintain open communication with partner agencies.”

“The officer involved was issued a citation ticket, which he accepted respectfully and without protest,” the police statement pointed out.

“We remain firm in our commitment that all QCPD personnel are equally accountable under the law, and as law enforcers, we should be examples of compliance to the law and respect for authority,” it added.
