Kanlaon Volcano emits ash for over 2 hours; still under Alert Level 3

Ashfall and sulfuric smell were reported in nearby areas after an ash emission occurred from the crater of Kanlaon Volcano on Saturday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

MANILA, Philippines — Six ash emission events were recorded in the Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island in the past 24 hours, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Wednesday.

According to Phivolcs in an advisory, the ash emissions lasted 9 to 122 minutes, or over 2 hours long.

Twenty-three (23) volcanic earthquakes, including nine volcanic tremors, were also recorded by the agency.

Meanwhile, a total of more than 1,200 tons of sulfur dioxide was emitted by the volcano on April 1, with plumes reaching about 500 meters tall.

With the latest emissions, Phivolcs said Alert Level 3 remains raised over Kanlaon Volcano, which indicates magmatic unrest.

Under Alert Level 3, the institute recommends the evacuation of all residents within a 6-kilometer radius of the volcano’s summit.

Flying any aircraft close to the volcano is also barred.

Kanlaon Volcano has been under Alert Level 3 since December 9, 2024.

On that day, it last erupted and produced a voluminous plume that rapidly rose to around 3,000 meters above the vent and drifted west-southwest.
