Heat index hits ‘danger’ levels in 5 Luzon areas

MANILA, Philippines — Five areas across the country might have dangerous heat index levels on Friday (March 7).

These are:

  • Dagupan City in Pangasinan
  • Iba in Zambales
  • Tanauan in Batangas
  • San Jose in Occidental Mindoro
  • Cuyo in Palawan

These areas are forecast to experience a 42-degree Celsius heat index, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The condition falls under the “danger” category, ranging from 42 to 51 degrees Celsius.

The heat index under this type can cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion, while heat stroke is probable with continued exposure to the sun.

On the other hand, Pagasa monitoring stations in Pasay City and Quezon City see a heat index of 40 and 39 degrees Celsius.

Behind the danger category are warnings to take “extreme caution” as temperatures range from 33 to 41 degrees Celsius and for people to exercise “caution” because the weather will be from 27 to 32 degrees Celsius.

“Extreme danger,” which is the highest category of heat index level, is declared when the heat index temperature reaches 52 degrees Celsius and beyond.

The heat index measures the level of discomfort an average person experiences due to the combined effects of the temperature and air humidity.

Pagasa has yet to declare the start of summer in the country.
